Now that the holidays are over (HOW?!), it’s time to look forward to a freezing cold winter for the foreseeable future.  Thinking about the next 3 or 4 months in the snow is just too depressing, so Raj and I decided to jet off to Mexico to celebrate the New Year in the sunshine — & we’re heading out this weekend!  It’s time to trade velvet and teddy bear jackets for some warm-weather new arrivals, so I’m teaming up with Nordstrom today to share my best packing tips!  You all know I’m a huge fan of carrying on my luggage anywhere I go!

Here are 5 of my favorite packing tips:

Stick with a color scheme.  I try to do this on every trip I go on and it makes packing SO much simpler, you end up bringing less, and it helps with the Instagram feed (I love when everything matches)!  For this trip, I went with blush, cognac and white in everything from dresses to swimsuits. It makes a huge difference for accessories — when everything is the same color scheme, you can minimize your accessories and your bag will magically be lighter!  These cognac wedges go with everything from a midi dress to denim cutoffs, these slides sandals are neutral and so comfortable, and this Cult Gaia bamboo bag is the perfect clutch to go with every outfit each night!

Bring pieces that pull double duty.  I’ve talked about this tip before, but it’s necessary to reuse each piece you end up bringing.  Instead of packing up 5 beach coverups, try to find a button down shirt that you can travel in with a pair of denim to your destination, but then also wear unbuttoned over a swimsuit by the pool.  Another double duty item? The one-piece swimsuit! With so many amazing one-piece swimsuits in stock this season, you can also re-wear a swimsuit with a fun pair of pants for a casual resort dinner, or for strolling around town with a fun printed skirt.  I also try to make sure to pack dresses that can be worn during the day and at night. This strapless Free People dress will definitely be worn a few times next week!

Stack and stuff your hats and bags.  When trying to pack in a carry-on, no space should be empty.  I always stuff my swimsuits, socks, and underwear in my clutch!  To travel with hats (including this fun frayed style for under $20), I try to end up wearing them, but if I’m not feeling that (you do look like a weirdo walking through the airport), I will stack them on top of each other, flip them upside down, and lay it on one side of the carry-on suitcase. I’ll then use softer clothing items to pack around the stack to keep it in place.  Bonus tip: if you get to your destination and find your straw hat lost its shape, mist it with water (or take a damp washcloth and blot the hat), mold it back into place, and let it sit to dry! If the rim won’t stay in place, you can add something slightly heavy on top to keep it down!

A foldable beach tote is essential.  There’s nothing worse than forgetting an actual beach tote.  As much as I love the structured ones (so chic!), they aren’t practical to travel with.  I love a foldable tote and found this one at Nordstrom for under $70!  It’s usually the last thing in the suitcase and gets put on top after everything else is packed!

Don’t forget your usual products.  To save space, I’ve tried using hotel products in the past and not bringing my usual mix of favorites.  Unfortunately for me, that just doesn’t cut it. On top of everything else out of routine when traveling (diet and bedding mostly), I just can’t afford to switch up my products for a week.  My skin and hair usually takes a HUGE beating and it takes weeks to recover. I love the travel beauty section at Nordstrom — they have just about every brand in minis!  To keep everything organized and to be TSA friendly, I love these clear cosmetic cases!
