We’re all trying to build better habits at home right now, right?! Well, maybe SOME better habits! One daily thing that my husband and I ended up sticking to after both starting to work from home years ago is to make our own coffee every single morning. It saves time, it saves money, and it’s so easy to do — it’s something we both look forward to each day.
Now that it’s starting to warm up, I switch from hot coffee to cold brew and thankfully, I’ve learned to easily make my own because that ish is EXPENSIVE — usually around $5 for a fix. No thank you. Add that up real quick… personally, I’d much rather put that money toward absolutely ANYTHING else. I found a $20 cold brew maker off Amazon a few years back and it’s been my go-to ever since.
HERE’S HOW TO EASILY MAKE COLD BREW COFFEE AT HOME
- First, you’ll need this cold brew maker. There are several sizes — but since it’s just me drinking cold brew in my household (Raj continues to drink hot coffee in the summer like a savage), we can go with the 1 quart size. You’ll likely need the bigger size if you have more people in your house and you don’t want to have to remake every night.
- Unscrew the top of the pitcher and then unscrew the filter out from the top.
- Fill up the pitcher with water, leaving about an inch of room up at the top.
- Fill the filter half way with coffee grounds — my favorite coffee is Trader Joe’s Expresso Country Blend. Screw the filter back onto the top.
- Submerge the filter into the pitcher with water and add to the refrigerator overnight. The longer the coffee has to steep, the stronger it will be.
- The next morning, pour the cold brew coffee over ice and add your favorite creamer — mine is almond or oat milk!
The pitcher usually lasts me about 3 days before I need to dump the coffee grounds, clean it all out, and start again. FYI — the directions tell you a few different things than I did above, but it’s been trial and error for me. The directions tell you to FILL the entire filter with coffee grounds and add that to the water. That basically makes a cold brew concentrate which you are then supposed to dilute with water when ready to drink. To me, the whole point of cold brew tasting so delicious is that it is steeped in cold water for a length of time. Adding water messes with the taste for me, so I’d personally rather make it WEAKER and not have to add water, but to each their own! It’s 100% a preference thing!
